IBFAN NETWORK COMPLETES 44 YEARS
12 October 2023 – IBFAN
_________
Founded in 1979, we are a global network which has worked tirelessly to combat misleading commercial promotion and protect breastfeeding, a vital pillar for children’s well-being.
Breastfeeding is a fundamental practice that provides nourishment, care, and immune support while guarding against malnutrition. Nevertheless, manufacturers of ultra-processed foods continue to threaten this crucial practice.
IBFAN collaborates with governments to enact legislation in accordance with the WHO/UNICEF International Code of Breast Milk Substitutes and World Health Assembly resolutions. Furthermore, IBFAN strives for national and global policies free from commercial influence. We have also been participating in Codex Alimentarius meetings since 1995, advocating for transparency, conflict of interest safeguards, and policy coherence in global food standards.
Our objective is to ensure that the standards and guidelines for infant and young child feeding align with World Health Assembly resolutions and the Code of Ethics in Food trade. Unfortunately, the influence of food corporations and politically influenced consensus has hindered the interests of health and the environment in resource-limited countries.
Therefore, it is our role to remind governments of the importance of protecting the most vulnerable members of society and ensuring the strongest standards for products intended for babies and children.
